Our eastern leisure desk covers Benoa and Serangan in Bali, Lembar and Gili Mas in Lombok, and Labuan Bajo in Flores. The work is yacht and liveaboard pre-purchase survey, charter fleet condition and insurance survey, and damage assessment — the highest concentration of leisure-vessel survey work in Indonesia.
Bali and Labuan Bajo hold most of Indonesia’s charter and leisure tonnage: motor yachts and sailing yachts at Benoa and Serangan, the phinisi liveaboard fleet working Komodo out of Labuan Bajo, dive boats, day-charter catamarans and a steady stream of foreign-flag yachts transiting or wintering. The survey work follows the season, and so does the availability of slipways.

Charter fleet condition surveys
A vessel in continuous charter service is maintained to keep sailing. That is not the same as maintained to keep her structure sound, and the difference shows up in a survey. The pattern we see on hard-worked charter vessels is consistent: excellent cosmetic presentation, reliable main machinery because it fails visibly, and deferred attention to everything that fails invisibly — bilge and fire pumping, through-hull fittings, steering gear, tender davits, LSA currency and, on wooden hulls, fastenings and seams.
A pre-season condition survey ahead of the dry season charter run is the single most useful engagement for an operator here, and underwriters increasingly ask for it.
Liveaboard safety and operational survey
Liveaboard operational checks in Labuan Bajo
- LSA against actual maximum persons on board including crew, not against an optimistic certificate.
- Firefighting: engine-room fixed system, portable extinguishers in date, and escape routes from every cabin that actually open.
- Dive compressor installation, intake position and filter records — the single highest-consequence system on a dive liveaboard.
- Bilge pumping and high-level alarms in every compartment, tested rather than described.
- Tender and dive-deck arrangements, ladder security and recovery capability.
- Navigation and communications suitable for Komodo and the eastern islands, including satellite where the itinerary leaves coverage.
Buying a yacht in Bali
Most yacht purchases in Bali are between foreign parties, on foreign-flag vessels, with the boat lying at Benoa. Two things reliably go wrong: the buyer skips the haul-out because the slipway is booked and the season is closing, and the documentation position — flag, import status, cruising permit history — is discovered after completion rather than before. Both are avoidable with a survey window written into the offer.
Where the intent is a Bali-specific pre-purchase yacht engagement handled by the local brokerage desk, that route is available through the Bali yacht broker’s pre-purchase survey desk. We handle the independent inspection side across vessel types and ports.
After a clean survey: putting the vessel to work
A significant share of buyers here intend the vessel to earn — Komodo charter, day trips, dive operation — and that intent changes what the survey has to answer: not just condition, but whether she can legally and safely carry paying guests, and what the compliance gap costs to close. Where an owner wants the vessel operated commercially rather than privately, the group’s charter-fleet investment programme for surveyed vessels is the operating route; our part ends with the condition report and the compliance gap list.
Frequently asked questions
Do you survey yachts at Benoa and Serangan?
Yes — afloat inspection, out-of-water survey when a slipway slot is available, sea trial in Benoa Bay, and insurance condition surveys for vessels based in Bali.
Can you survey a liveaboard in Labuan Bajo?
Yes, both the structural survey and the operational and safety layer: LSA, firefighting, escape routes, compressor installation, bilge arrangements and navigation equipment.
How far ahead should I book a haul-out survey in Bali?
Two to four weeks in the dry season. Slipway capacity at Serangan and Benoa is limited and the charter fleet books it out ahead of the season.
Do you attend casualties in Komodo and the Flores anchorages?
Yes — grounding, fire and machinery casualties on the charter fleet. Attendance is by Labuan Bajo with boat transfer; tell us the position and we will give a realistic ETA.
Do you carry out pre-season fleet inspections for charter operators?
Yes, and increasingly at the underwriter’s request. A uniform condition grading across a fleet also makes budgeting and renewal negotiation much simpler.
Can you value a charter yacht or liveaboard?
Yes. Where the vessel has verifiable earnings and contracts, income capitalisation is used as a cross-check alongside comparable sales or replacement cost.
Do you cover Lombok and the Gili islands?
Yes, from the Bali desk — Lembar, Gili Mas and the Gili anchorages, normally within a day.
