Our Jakarta desk attends Tanjung Priok, Marunda, Sunda Kelapa, Muara Baru and the Jakarta Bay anchorages. The work here is dominated by cargo claims and damage survey — container, general and project cargo — alongside pre-purchase inspection of leisure craft and workboats, normally with same-day or next-day attendance.
Tanjung Priok handles the largest share of Indonesia’s container throughput, and with volume comes claims. Water-damaged cargo, crushed and short-landed consignments, reefer failures, container damage and project-cargo handling disputes are the daily work of a Jakarta marine surveyor. Alongside that sits a second market entirely: the barge and tug fleet at Marunda, the traditional cargo vessels at Sunda Kelapa, and the leisure and fishing craft at Muara Baru and Ancol.

Cargo claims at Tanjung Priok: what actually decides them
A cargo claim in Jakarta is usually decided on three things, and all three are perishable.
- Condition at outturn, recorded before the cargo moves. Once a consignment leaves the terminal and enters a warehouse, the causation argument becomes very hard to win. We attend during discharge wherever the instruction reaches us in time.
- Whether the damage is consistent with the carriage. Rain-water staining patterns, condensation damage, crush from stow height, chafe from inadequate lashing and pre-shipment damage all leave different signatures. The report separates what was observed from what it means.
- The paperwork trail. Bill of lading remarks, mate’s receipts, packing lists, container seal numbers and reefer temperature logs. A claim with clean bills and a damaged outturn turns on whether the damage could have occurred before shipment.
Beyond cargo: pre-purchase and condition work in Jakarta
Jakarta is also where a large number of workboats and small commercial vessels change hands. The recurring pattern we see is a steel workboat, 20 to 35 years old, with an unknown plating history and several undocumented repairs. That vessel needs thickness measurement on a planned grid rather than a walkthrough — see hull and machinery survey. Leisure buyers at Ancol and Batavia Marina get the standard pre-purchase survey scope with a sea trial in Jakarta Bay.
Practical notes for Jakarta attendance
Jakarta attendance notes
- Terminal access requires advance notice and a port pass; give us the vessel, berth and ETA as early as you can and we handle the pass application.
- Jakarta Bay anchorage attendance is by launch from Marunda or Priok; sea state during the northwest monsoon can delay boarding by hours.
- Reefer claims need the container’s own temperature log downloaded before the unit is powered down — ask the terminal to preserve it at the same time you instruct us.
- For project cargo, instruct before loading rather than after discharge. A pre-shipment condition record ends most later arguments before they start.
Frequently asked questions
Do you attend at Tanjung Priok terminals?
Yes — NPCT1, JICT, Koja and the conventional berths, plus the Jakarta Bay anchorages. Terminal access needs advance notice for the port pass.
How fast can you attend a cargo damage survey in Jakarta?
Same day where the instruction arrives during working hours and the pass can be arranged; otherwise next morning. For a discharge already under way, tell us and we will mobilise while the instruction is confirmed.
Can you act as a joint surveyor with the receiver’s surveyor?
Yes. Joint surveys are normal at Priok, with each party’s surveyor attending together, findings recorded jointly and each party reserving its position.
Do you inspect containers as well as cargo?
Yes — container structural condition, seal integrity, leak testing where required, and reefer unit and temperature-log review.
Do you survey vessels at Sunda Kelapa and Marunda?
Yes. Traditional inter-island cargo vessels and the tug and barge fleet are regular work, typically condition, valuation and barge suitability.
Can you handle a survey for an overseas underwriter with no Indonesian presence?
Yes. That is a large part of the Jakarta workload: English reporting, USD invoicing and direct correspondence with the instructing underwriter or club correspondent.
