Direct answer

We provide redacted sample reports on request, before you commit. Each sample shows the real structure of that report type — scope and limitations, findings by system, measured data, photographic convention, graded defect list and declaration — with vessel identity and client details removed.

You should never buy a survey without seeing what the deliverable looks like. Ask us, ask the other firms you are considering, and compare the documents rather than the quotations.

Sample sets available

Redacted sample report sets
Report type What the sample shows Typical length
Pre-purchase, leisure vessel Full scope blocks, sea trial data, moisture mapping convention, graded defect list, market-value opinion 30 – 60 pages with photographs
Condition & valuation Condition grading scale, valuation method disclosure, comparable or replacement-cost reasoning, recommendations with deadlines 25 – 50 pages
Hull & machinery with UTM Thickness readings on plate diagrams, wastage percentages against original scantlings, coating grading, machinery trial data 40 – 90 pages
Draft survey Full calculation — six draughts, trim and deflection corrections, density, ballast and constants — with the arithmetic shown 8 – 16 pages
Bunker quantity survey Tank-by-tank gauging, temperature profiles, volume correction, wedge calculation, vessel-versus-barge-versus-surveyor comparison 6 – 12 pages
Cargo damage / outturn Condition record, damage mapping, causation discussion separated from fact, tally and sampling records 15 – 40 pages
Phinisi / wooden hull Pick-test and fastening-withdrawal locations, seam and garboard findings, moisture profile, timber-specific grading 25 – 50 pages

What is removed from a sample

Redaction applied to every sample

  • Vessel name, official and hull identification numbers, registration details and photographs that identify the vessel.
  • Client name and all correspondence details.
  • Any commercially sensitive figure — purchase price, contract value, cargo parcel value.
  • Third-party names: brokers, yards, terminals, laboratories.

What is not removed is the substance: the findings, the measured data, the grading, the photographs of defects and the conclusion. A sample with the findings removed tells you nothing.

How to use a sample when comparing quotations

  1. Check whether measured data appears at all, and whether it is presented in a way you could check.
  2. Check the limitations section. A short limitations section on a survey with no haul-out is a warning, not a convenience.
  3. Check whether defects are graded with timescales, or whether everything is simply “recommended”.
  4. Check whether the conclusion actually concludes.
  5. Check for an independence declaration and a contactable practice.

Full detail on how to read a report — yours or someone else’s — is on the report page.
